A Perfect Pair: J.Crew ‘Pixie’ Pants + Sam Edelman ‘Petty’ Boots

After keeping track of my outfits for the past seven months, I realized that I have some go-to combinations that never fail me. Last month, I noticed just how much I wore my black J.Crew ‘Pixie’ pants with my black leather Sam Edelman ‘Petty’ ankle boots. I wore the combination in four different outfits I featured here and in four other outfits I wore but did not photograph/share. (Did anyone notice? Haha.) I was slightly worried about sharing so many outfits with the same bottom half, but I loved them too much not to…and after all, they were all outfits I wore in my real life! I figured showcasing some of these “perfect pairs” would be fun, and I always enjoy seeing how an item or two can be remixed!

November remix chain recap

Happy December! As I did for my April remix chain, I thought I’d recap my November remix chain and add in a little more analysis. If you’re not sure what exactly I did, I basically remixed 15  tops and 15 bottoms, alternating between top and bottom. The bottoms I wore on day 1 were also worn on day 30 to complete the chain. The weather for the month was relatively consistent for it being fall, with not many drastic changes in temperature or precipitation. The biggest change was travelling to California over Thanksgiving break and having to dress for 70-80+ degree temperatures instead of 40-50 degree temperatures!

Anyway, here are all 30 of my looks in order from November 1st to November 30th:

nov1 nov2 nov3 nov4 nov5

First thoughts: I very much preferred wearing pants over wearing skirts/dresses (with tights). Out of 15 bottoms, three of them were skirts and two of them were dresses. That means two-thirds of my bottoms were jeans or pants. When it’s cold out, I gravitate towards pants since they tend to be warmer and less fussier than tights (though I do love a good pair of fleece-lined tights). I also stuck to a relatively cohesive color palette. My base neutrals were black, grey, ivory/white, and denim blue. My secondary colors consisted of navy, burgundy, and red, and my accent colors were forest green, mustard yellow, and camel. All of my color combinations felt true to the season, even when I was in the California warmth.

My favorite outfits were day 3, day 5, day 6, day 7, day 16, day 18, day 19, day 24, day 27, and day 28. These looks had some of my favorite color combinations, and the fit of the pieces were exactly how I liked. I remember feeling extra confident on these days. I realize that I picked every day that I wore a cropped sweater. I really like the looks I put together with them! Also, I find it kind of funny that I liked three days in a row: days 5-7. I had a pretty good streak going, haha.

My least favorite outfits were day 4, day 9, day 20, and day 23. For the most part, I’m really happy with the outfits I put together! There were only a few that I likely wouldn’t repeat. Not surprisingly, the monochrome grey outfit made the list. I think I would have liked it more if the sweatshirt was more fitted. I just kind of look like I’m wearing PJs and I didn’t feel put together that day. The two looks featuring longer sweaters over skirts also didn’t feel like me, and I wasn’t as confident wearing those. I don’t mind tying a shirt over a dress, but the look with the flannel over the dress doesn’t feel cohesive to me. Perhaps it was my bare legs and combat boot combination?

In addition to my obvious repeats, I also repeated quite a few other items, like my shoes. I’m the type of person that loves to get a ton of wears out of my pieces because I don’t have the disposable income to spend to wear things only once (I mean, who really does, unless you’re making millions?). Not to mention, I love the pieces I do buy, and I want to wear them a lot! Here’s a breakdown of the extra pieces I wore at least twice during the month and how many times they were worn:

  • Black ankle boots: 6 (days 2, 5, 11, 14, 21, and 25)
  • Black loafers: 4 (days 1, 7, 26, and 30)
  • Cognac combat boots: 4 (days 3, 9, 15, 24)
  • Black gem earrings: 4 (days 7, 13, 25, and 27)
  • Brown tall boots: 3 (days 12, 16, and 18)
  • Cognac ankle boots: 2 (days 10 and 17)
  • Red loafers: 2 (days 4 and 19)
  • Navy sandals: 2 (days 27 and 28)
  • White collared blouse: 2 (days 8 and 18)
  • Chambray shirt: 2 (days 6 and 17)
  • Trench coat: 2 (days 1 and 22)
  • Sideways ‘K’ necklace: 2 (days 4 and 24)
  • Chevron necklace: 2 (days 6 and 11)

Not too shabby, eh? I should note that I did wear a coat or jacket on the days one wasn’t photographed; I usually just wear them for practicality and not necessarily because they go with my outfit (’cause sometimes they don’t!). I also realized that I only photographed a bag once during the month. I don’t use bags during the week (unless we go grocery shopping), but I never really planned outfits included bags since my bags are pretty neutral.

I also want to mention the items that were worn during this remix chain that were also worn during my April remix chain. The tops I repeated were the burgundy cardigan and the asymmetrical grey cardigan (though the grey cardigan was not one of the 15 tops I remixed twice this time). The bottoms I repeated were the high-rise jeans, dark wash skinny jeans, legging jeans, boyfriend jeans, forest green pants, camel pants, and black skirt. Obviously jeans are the easiest thing for me to wear, so they were bound to be worn again this past month!

Overall, I’d say that my November remix chain was pretty successful–more successful than my April remix chain as far as outfits that I like and the fit of my pieces. I stick to simple silhouettes and a narrower color palette when making outfits with restrictions, which is not a surprise. I’ll be using the information from this recap to further streamline my wardrobe and make smart purchasing decisions in the future. 🙂

Falling with style

Even though my outfit for Thanksgiving was not very weather appropriate, I did bring a dress to wear on Friday and Saturday! We spent most of the day Friday on the beach, soaking up the vitamin D before heading back north for the rest of winter. The sweater proved to be a perfect addition in the evening. Once the sun went behind the horizon (at about 4:45 pm), the temperature dropped quite suddenly; it actually felt like fall!

Yesterday, we celebrated my grandpa’s 80th birthday with a big family party at my grandparents’ house! My grandma really went all out; we had an open bar, taco bar, dance floor, and live band. We had so much fun eating, drinking, dancing, singing, and hanging out with family members–some we haven’t seen in years and others we’ve never met (at least for my brother, cousins, and me).

I remixed my striped dress by layering this fun, asymmetrical cardigan over it. It was a cool night, so the cardigan was necessary and definitely appreciated! I brought a pretty necklace to wear in lieu of earrings (I like to give my ears a break after wearing the heavy ones from Friday). My mom did my eye makeup for me. 🙂

Finally–the last day of my remix chain! Today is also my last day in southern California; I’m not so excited to go back to the cold. (When I think about flying, I’m reminded of the quote that Woody says in Toy Story: “That wasn’t flying! That was falling…with style.” Hence the title of the post. Also it’s fall, and I blog about my personal style, so I thought it was fitting in those ways, too. Haha.)

Do you recognize the jeans? I wore them on day 1 of my remix chain! I love the kind of “infinite loop” I created with my outfits. This outfit is perfect for travelling: slip-on shoes, comfy layers, long pants, and no belts or jewelry. Now I just hope I don’t have any problems leaving on maybe not the busiest travel day of the year, but one of the busiest!

P.S. Big thank you to my mom, who took my photos the past few days! 🙂

Gobble gobble

Simple and not very exciting is basically the name of the game right now. It’s been quite a while since I’ve featured this top, which is odd because I wear it so much! I guess it’s because I always wear it in outfits like these, which are relatively boring and “normal”, haha. It’s getting down to the end of the month so my inspiration is running dry and outfits like these are about the best you’ll see from here on out.

Yesterday, I flew to southern California to spend Thanksgiving with my mom’s side of the family and celebrate my grandpa’s 80th birthday. Here’s what I wore for a day full of traveling (by plane, train, and automobile) followed by indulging in authentic Mexican food and drinks (margaritas, of course!). The outfit I wore today (which ended up not being the outfit I had originally planned–more below) was the outfit I was planning on wearing yesterday, but I switched up the order because of tomorrow’s outfit. Sometimes this remix chain can be a real pain. 😉

P.S. Thanks to my momma for taking photos for me! And that’s Buddy, my grandparents’ dog–he decided to make a cameo. 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving, lovely readers! 🙂 I’m so thankful for each and every one of you! I can’t believe how many of you tune in to my blog after just a year of writing it. Thank you, thank you!

As I mentioned above, I’m spending Thanksgiving in southern California. I’m by the ocean, so I knew it wasn’t going to be really hot; however, today is the warmest day this weekend at right around 80 degrees, and we went inland for Thanksgiving dinner, where it was ten degrees hotter. This is what I wore, which is not what I had originally planned surprisingly enough. (I forgot to pack the shirt I was going to wear under my sweater, and I decided against wearing my ankle boots.) I seriously planned this terribly. I forgot what this kind of heat felt like! Even though shorts would have been a better idea, these pants were a fantastic idea–stretchy and oh-so comfortable. I can’t recommend the J.Crew Pixie pants more!

Candy cane stripes

Well, the forecast called for 1-2 inches of snow Saturday night, but that didn’t quite pan out. There was less than an inch on the ground Sunday morning, but it all melted as the day went on. I was determined to find a place for photos that had SOME snow since I did wear my snow boots, and this was the best I could find, sadly! At least my toes were toasty warm, haha. It actually started snowing/graupeling (graupel: snow pellets) while we were doing photos which was kind of fun. A few of them stuck to my sweater!

I decided to try the sweater-over-skirt look again, much to Chris’s dismay. He really does not like this look for some reason! The skirt didn’t lay quite as I would have liked. I think maybe it would look better if the skirt had more structured pleats? This one has random bumps that don’t really jive well with sweaters/tops that aren’t tucked in. At least I’ve got an A+ color combination going on!

Today, I decided to mix patterns a bit and wear my polka dot jeans with my striped sweater! It started snowing this morning, so I went with combat boots instead of ankle or tall boots, but I totally could have worn other boots since it stopped the second I walked outside. (Typical, right?) It was still really cold today, and I’m already dreading the winter outfit photo sessions!

Blazers to trench coats

The reason why I wore a monochrome grey outfit on Thursday was because of this outfit I had planned for yesterday. You may also remember this one from my latest Outfit Obsessions post; it was one I couldn’t wait to recreate! (I’m a poet and I don’t even know it.) Navy, white, grey, and black together in one outfit? Sign me up! The only thing I wasn’t sure about were my pants. Obviously ankle length pants with tighter ankles would have looked better. I debated cuffing these so they wouldn’t stack so much around my boots, but I didn’t like how the cuffing looked as much. Oh well, at least I didn’t look like I was wearing PJs all day! This was the first time I attempted dressing down my blazer, and I quite like how it worked out. It was even warm enough in the afternoon yesterday to forgo a coat! I’m going to miss the nice weather; it’s going to snow tonight and tomorrow. Boo.

Sorry for the poor quality pictures from today! It rained ALL day, and we were busy until the sun went down, so a combination of cold, wind, and poor lighting led to blurry photos. I salvaged them as much as possible with my VSCOcam app since I don’t know many tricks on Photoshop Elements!

Since I was expecting a cold, miserable day, I remixed by white tee by layering a cozy cardigan over it. I decided to tuck it into my simple black skirt for no real reason except this is what I had planned in my head, haha. Of course, my trench coat, Hunter boots, and umbrella were necessary to get through the day (and yet I still got plenty wet because it was raining sideways…oh, weather). Sometime soon the rain is supposed to turn to snow. I’ll be bundled up under a lot of blankets and drinking hot chocolate all night!

Grey craze

So, blanket scarves. We can agree that they are a little bit ridiculous, right? I can’t help but make fun of myself all day when I wear mine. I call it my scarf beard, haha. But you know what? They are totally amazing and SO warm! I’m totally on board the blanket scarf bandwagon. I may or may not want one or two more… 😉

Meanwhile, I kept this outfit super comfy-casual with my elbow patch sweatshirt, a go-to pair of skinny jeans, and my red loafers. I realized I’ve been wearing my boots a lot lately and I should get in more wears with my loafers and sneakers before the snow comes! (And, sadly, the snow is coming–this weekend probably. Sigh!)

It is no secret that grey is one of my favorite colors to wear. For today’s outfit, I took my love of wearing grey to a whole new level: monochrome grey. I’m not going to lie, I was kind of intimidated to wear this look in public (and by public I mean the office I share with a few other people). Also, to be honest, I felt like I was really “normcore” (though not intentionally). My pants are so comfortable that they felt like sweats, so all day I felt like I was wearing a grey sweatsuit. Haha. While I likely won’t be repeating this exact outfit, it was fun to play around a bit and create a look I would totally not have created a year ago!

Prep in my step

My chambray shirt (yes, I only own one!) is hands down one of my best purchases ever. I love wearing it alone with dark denim and/or layered under other tops/sweaters. It goes with pretty much everything. This is the second time I’m featuring it in my remix chain this month. In addition to the chambray, I’m obsessed with this sweater! Aren’t the details on it so cool?! I bought it way back in May, got to wear it once before summer arrived, and finally got to pull it back out within the last month. Sadly, it isn’t available anymore, but Madewell always has tons of other wonderful options!

I can’t resist wearing a collared shirt with this sweater, and thanks to the inspiration I included in my latest Outfit Obsessions post, I had the perfect outfit in mind! (Apologies for the super wrinkly shirt; that tends to happen since I sit at a computer all day!) My tall boots are getting more wear this month than I had anticipated. They give a preppier vibe that works for some of these outfits, and I don’t think I would swap them out for any other shoe. So far, I feel really good about the outfits I’ve put together this month! I hope I can keep the momentum going for the final 12 days. 🙂

Not a polar vortex

I remixed my striped skirt by pairing it with my forest green sweater I picked up at Nordstrom Rack a year ago. I bought it when I still liked tight sweaters versus oversized sweaters, so I probably should have gone a size up… Nevertheless, it tucks into skirts nicely. I added my black vest and finished the look with tights, combat boots, and one of my monogrammed necklaces. I was very glad to have worn the vest; I had a coat and a scarf with me, but the vest helped me stay warm in the FREEZING COLD wind last night. It was bitterly cold. Chris and I did some outlet shopping and did not stay long because of it. I do feel the need to remind everyone that this is just a cold front, not a “polar vortex” of any kind. When did we stop calling them cold fronts, anyway? *eyes media*

I’m kind of obsessed with the colors I have going on in this outfit. The scarf is a new addition (purchased last night), and I love it! It’s so soft and the colors are wonderful. I wore it instead of my other plaid scarf today because the green in it matches my sweater. I kept this outfit simple for running errands and just hanging out at home avoiding the cold air. (Chris and I hated every minute of this photo session–BRRR!)

My Autumn/Winter ’14 Signature Look

It has been a year and a day since my first signature look post. Crazy! I shared my spring/summer ’14 signature look back in May. Continuing with the theme, I decided to mix a signature look post in with my remix chain. It just so happens that yesterday and today, I wore two versions of what I believe will be my signature look for this season.

This fall and winter, you’re most likely to find me in a sweater, skinny pants/jeans, and boots (usually ankle boots, though I have an arsenal including tall boots and combat boots). I wore a variation of this outfit three times this month so far, including yesterday’s outfit. (Side note: It snowed yesterday. It’s gone now but will likely come back tomorrow. NO!) I’m also planning on wearing sweaters and skirts (or possibly dresses) with tights and boots this season. I definitely think the pants look will be worn more often since I can only handle tights for so many days, but I like to show two different looks for the sake of variation.

As far as beauty goes, I haven’t really changed up my routine at all, haha. I wear my hair down more often now that it’s shorter, and I don’t do too much with it. To mix it up, I rely on ponytails, buns, and putting back my bangs with bobby pins. (My hair looks really bad in the photos from yesterday because of static electricity. I blame it on my down coat!) For makeup, I’m still using just BB cream and mascara. I am interested in playing around a bit more with eyeliner and potentially filling out my brows a bit more (I bought eyebrow shadow that I want to play with!). Maybe I won’t be so lazy and actually mix up my look a bit!
