How You Get the Girl: My December wishlist

J.Crew Thin Shaped Hoop Earrings (available here) / Helmut Lang ‘Villous’ Zip Up Sweatshirt in black (available at Nordstrom) / Dior Nail Glow (available at Sephora) / Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances in paperback (available at Amazon) / Charlotte Olympia ‘Kitty’ Flat in navy (available at Nordstrom) / Idaho Home T in grey (available here) / Panasonic RPHJE120S In-Ear Headphones in silver (available at Amazon) / Whimbrel Cape by Saturday/Sunday (available at Anthropologie) / Madewell Blanket Scarf (available here) / Anthropologie Helene Tortie Sunglasses (available here)

I thought it would be fun to name a gift guide using the title of one of my favorite songs from Taylor Swift’s 1989, How You Get the Girl. Since I don’t have the time nor fashion sense to pick out items good for other people, I decided to turn it into a gift guide…for myself (a.k.a. just a wishlist, as we all know). I haven’t made a wishlist in a long time, mostly because I tend to either buy what I want after a month or so of deliberation, or I want to keep what I want a secret in hopes that no one else discovers it and buys it up before I can (an irrational yet real fear).

These are some of the items I’ve had on my wishlist for quite some time. I included some non-fashion items because why not?! I’m in love with John Green’s books and it’s the only book I don’t own/haven’t read (I’m working on Paper Towns right now!). Also, I go through headphones way too often, so I tend to stick with the cheap pairs. These have amazing reviews for the price so maybe they’ll last longer than other cheap pairs I’ve purchased! Of course, most of the items are fashion-related. I included some “if my family happens to win the lottery” items just for fun. 😉

Here are some tips/tricks for shopping at these retailers (just in case my family happens to be reading):

  • J.Crew and Madewell always have some sort of sale, so don’t pay full price. If they don’t for some reason, wait a few days and check back. Most of the big promos start on Thursday or Friday and last through the weekend. I would advise against purchasing items that are final sale because if the fit is off or quality is poor you can’t return them. Both retailers also offer a 15% off student discount in store that you can stack with promos unless they are global promos.
  • Nordstrom and Anthropologie both have great return policies. Nordstrom does not charge for shipping, though Anthropologie does unless they happen to have a free shipping promo. They are rare so you have to keep your eyes peeled on the site. Sometimes Anthro has a percentage-off sale on all items but that may not happen again before Christmas.
  • If in doubt, gift cards are the best way to go. They are not as impersonal as they may seem, I promise! Gift cards tell the recipient that they can treat themselves with whatever they may please and get exactly what they’ve been wishing for. I always get excited when I’m out shopping and I remember I have gift cards to spend!
  • If your favorite airline lets you earn points/miles from shopping, don’t forget to shop through them! I keep forgetting to shop through Southwest Airlines’ Rapid Rewards shopping, which is quite frustrating because I’d have 1000+ more points if only I had remembered!

Happy shopping! 😉

Feeling fall with Madewell

Let’s digress from the current season (which is summer, guys; it’s definitely still summer–at least here in the desert… don’t mind those mild temperatures, the warmth is coming back…). Anyway. FALL! It’s coming. Every single style blogger has mentioned it within the past week, I know. As much as I’m excited for my fall outfits (I’m bringing it, you guys; my archives are going to look very sad), I’m not completely prepared to say goodbye to summer. What I am prepared for, though, is planning out my fall purchases. Madewell has been on their game lately; I’m swooning over sooo many new arrivals! From cozy knits to luscious leather, my wishlist has been growing every week. It doesn’t help that now I have a local store to pick up my goodies at! 😉 Today, I’m sharing with you a few of my favorites.

{Skinny Skinny Sateen Jeans}

I tried on these pants in store today because I’ve been wanting a pair of skinny burgundy pants for fall. I am in love with these! They are the perfect color and are sooo comfortable. I can’t wait to pick them up, put them on, and never take them off. (FYI: I took a size larger than my usual skinny skinny size!)

{Heathered Jersey Dress}

This dress is only available online, but nevertheless–it’s an amazing, simple grey dress. I will be watching for a good sale like a hawk so I can snatch this up. A dress like this has been topping my list for months now! It is simple enough to transition well from season to season.

{Texturework Sweater}

After I decided that the sweater I owned in a similar color was poorer quality than I wanted, I’ve been on the lookout for a replacement. Well, I think I found the replacement! I tried this on in store and fell in love. It’s so soft and cozy. I’m also loving the marled sage and retro navy colorways, so I may just have to own more than one of this sweater!

{High Riser Skinny Skinny Jeans in Atlantic}

I wasn’t going to try any jeans on while in store today…that is, until I saw the photo in the dressing room of the models wearing the high riser skinny skinny jeans. I decided to try on the jeans in atlantic, this wonderful dark blue color (they are darker in real life than in the photo). They fit like a dream! I was shocked that the waistband didn’t gape at the back like a lot of waistbands on high-rise jeans do on me. Because of that, they were added to my wishlist. (As with the jeans above, I took a size larger than my regular skinny skinny size!)

{The Transport Tote}

Everyone and their mother has the English saddle colorway of this tote, but I cannot get enough of the dark cabernet! Ah! So, so perfect for fall. While I didn’t see this exact tote in store, I did see the color, and it is so beautiful. This bag has officially made it to my wishlist. Good thing my birthday is coming up soon!

{Lbt-Lbt Noise Short-sleeve Sweatshirt in Stripe}

This short-sleeve sweatshirt by Lbt-Lbt (“Libertine Libertine”) is what dreams are made of: perfect stripes and a comfortable fit for cooler months. While I would pay full price for it if I could, I’ve been anxiously awaiting a sale for quite a while now. I’m hoping a sale happens soon (and that the sweatshirt lives up to my dreams, since I wasn’t able to find it in store).

Bonus! Here’s a crappy photo of me in the fitting room wearing the skinny skinny sateen jeans and the texturework sweater! I love how they look together. 🙂

My June wishlist

Life handed me very sour lemons. I had an outfit post all lined up for today, until I was looking through the photos and realized how terrible the lighting actually was. It was so terrible that you couldn’t even make out the pattern on my top, and my weak Photoshop skills could not make the photos look any better. Someday I’ll get better at this whole photography thing, but for now, here’s what I’ve been wishing for. C’est la vie!

White collared tank top {Everlane’s “The Silk Sleeveless”}

I’ve been looking for a top like this to layer under other tops and sweaters for as long as I can remember and have found nothing comparable to this one at any of my regular stores (J.Crew, Madewell, H&M, etc.). If you know where I can find a top like this for much less than $60 I would be very grateful.

Black leather sandals {Apiece Apart Il Sandalo}

I’m so in love with these sandals, and they are so far out of my price range it’s not even funny. That’s why this is called a wishlist, right? I’ve been searching for something similar, and I’m thinking about ordering custom sandals from Ananias Sandals on Etsy because I’ve heard great things about the owner. These sandals would replace my very, very old black Target sandals that were featured here. I’ve worn them to death!

White skinny jeans {Madewell Skinny Skinny Jeans in Pure White}

I don’t have one pair of white jeans for spring/summer, and this is a problem! I tried Gap’s white legging jeans and didn’t like the fit on me, and I tried ordering a pair during the Nordstrom half-yearly sale but my order was cancelled. This Madewell pair I’ve had on my wishlist for months. I’m waiting patiently for a sale, but they haven’t been marked down yet. It’s starting to look like I won’t be getting my jeans until the end of summer sales, if at all!

Medium wash denim jacket {Gap 1969 Denim Jacket}

I do not own a denim jacket. Isn’t that crazy?! I’ve been wary of them since I remember wearing them in the 90s and I very much associate them with the 90s. I decided I should get my hands on one, but I haven’t found the perfect jacket yet. I tried on the jackets available at H&M but wasn’t in love with the fit. The bloggers I follow have jackets that fit them amazingly well, so that’s what I’m looking for! I love the medium wash of this Gap jacket.

Linen tee {Madewell Linen Heathered Timeoff Tee}

I’ve heard wonderful things about linen and how nice it is during the summer. It gets really hot where I live (multiple days above 100 are not uncommon), so linen tees have been on my radar and I’m hoping to find the perfect tee soon. This Madewell tee is the perfect color and looks quite comfortable! I’m also a fan of how it drapes.

Navy and white striped fit-and-flare dress {Tiana B. Striped Cotton Dress}

Ah, the elusive dress of my dreams. I actually purchased this dress when it was on Hautelook at the end of March. My order ended up being cancelled because either Hautelook didn’t tell the designer how many dresses were ordered or the designer didn’t send enough. Either way, I am so sad. It was the perfect dress (assuming that it would have fit perfectly). I can’t find it anywhere else, thus the lack of link. I’m pretty picky about this dress. I want it to be navy and white (not cream), a fit-and-flare style, made of mostly cotton, preferably sleeveless, preferably with pockets, and I want the navy stripes to be thin like this Tiana B. dress. Like my white skinny jeans, I may have to give up on this dress…for now.

Seeing spring with ModCloth

This past week, I’ve had a taste of spring-like weather, and I can’t wait for more! I’ve been thinking a bit about what pieces I want to add to freshen up my spring/summer wardrobe, and I am absolutely enthralled by some of the new arrivals popping up on ModCloth. Here are a few of my favorite spring pieces!

Daydreaming at Daybreak Dress — This is a beautiful white lace dress. I adore fit-and-flare silhouettes and would love to add this to my everyday dress collection. It’s selling out fast, but my fingers are crossed for a restock!

Siren Call Sandal in Cocoa — How cute are these Seychelles sandals?! The cutouts and small wedge add a nice touch to these neutral beauties. They’re on the expensive end, but if they’re ever on sale (wishful thinking, since they’re selling out already!), I’d snatch them up!

Majorette Meet-up Top — I don’t have enough interesting spring/summer tops. I find myself looking in my closet only to have “nothing to wear” a lot in the warmer months because of this! I love the pattern on this top; it’s a chevron without being the overdone chevron pattern all over Pinterest.

Rays on a Cloudy Day Scarf in Peach — Lighter scarves are the ideal winter-to-spring transition piece. I only have a small window to wear them since spring is generally short-lived where I live! I like that this scarf is a mix of stripes and solid. Plus, the color is perfect for spring.

Serious Sparkle Sandal — I LOVE this dark blue sandal with the jewels on the straps. Blue is one of my favorite colors, especially for spring/summer! These are currently out of stock but they look to be restocked soon.

Can’t Wait to Sea You Earrings — These starfish earrings add the perfect nautical touch! I can’t get enough. Plus, they’d go with so many outfits!

My January wishlist

It’s Friday! It’s Friday! It was a short week, but I am so ready for the weekend. My week didn’t end as well as it started. Such is the life of a grad student sometimes! I like unwinding from a long day of doing (or staring at) science by watching my favorite TV shows, eating potato chips dipped in cream cheese, playing with my cats, and perusing my favorite websites, among other things (including blogging, of course!). Here’s a quick list of the pieces I’ve been lusting so far this month from many a day spent perusing the web!

Jack Wills Kemplay Crew Sweater

I’ve been staring at this sweater for about two weeks. It’s on sale, but I’m not sure how the sizing runs, so I haven’t taken the plunge on it. Winter won’t be over here for about a month and a half, so I’m still loving sweaters!

Madewell Billie Boot

You guys. I am in absolute love with these boots. I first saw them on Pinterest and repinned them. Then, I was in a Madewell store with a friend and we drooled over these. (I didn’t try them on and I should have.) Leaving the store, we saw a girl wearing them and became immediately jealous. I was hoping they’d be my next “big” purchase (with a good sale/coupon code), but they’re out of stock in my size. Excuse me while I quietly sob.

ModCloth Triple the Charm Bag

I love the colors on this bag. The combination of black, ivory, and tan make it easy to incorporate into different outfits (a huge plus for me because I’m not really a bag person; I have two that I use regularly). It’s currently out of stock but I hope to snag it when it comes back.

Julianne Hough for Sole Society Emmy Flat

These are adorable! I love the pointed toe and straps. I just can’t decide if the black or the dark sky color would work better in my wardrobe. I feel like the dark sky would go well with my navy skirts, but what if it’s too light? Would that look weird?

Gap Printed Fit & Flare Dress

Going along with the navy theme, this dress is dreamy! I am a sucker for navy and white stripes at any time of year, but this dress definitely gets me into a spring state of mind. It doesn’t help that two bloggers I follow have posted outfits featuring this dress. I want this dress so bad it’s almost a need. 😉

ModCloth Light Up My Life Skirt in Night

When I decided I was in need of a black mini skirt, this one was my first choice. Unfortunately, it’s been out of stock in my size for a couple of weeks now and there is no plan to restock it. I’ve got my fingers crossed that a return comes back, especially now that it’s on sale! In the meanwhile, I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for a worthy replacement.

NYE party picks

It’s almost 2014! I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love sequins and jewels for New Year’s Eve celebrations! I don’t have a fancy party to go to this year (as usual), but I still love perusing websites looking for the perfect party pieces. I am totally in love with Anthropologie right now. They have some really great pieces on sale, which is perfect for me because I can’t afford their products at full price! They’re also currently doing an extra 25% off all sale items with the code 25BELOW. I stopped in on the 26th and couldn’t resist picking up a couple of things!

Here’s a little list I put together of sale pieces from Anthro that I would pick myself for New Year’s Eve parties! (Click on the picture to go to the item.) Hope you all have a fantastic NYE!

My November wishlist

It’s crunch time lately at work. I have a lot of data to analyze for a conference coming up and a paper I need to write. When I’m not thinking about my endless to-do list, my mind is wandering to my ModCloth Love List. (If you make an account, you can “love” things, which saves them to a list that you can view. It’s nice for keeping everything you love together! If you don’t have an account, feel free to use this link to sign up. You get $15 off your first order of $50+ and free shipping!)

Here’s a few things on my ModCloth Love List that I am lusting over this month. I don’t need anything, especially with Christmas coming up (and snow tires to buy…yay), but it’s fun to dream! These items scream late fall/early winter to me.

Velvet, If You Please Dress in Merlot — I’ve been dreaming of the perfect burgundy velvet holiday dress for a few years now. Unfortunately, this one is out of stock and won’t be coming back. I’ll have to keep my eyes out for a new one!

Logging Miles Boot in Black — This faux-shearling lined chunky winter boot would be perfect when the snow starts falling (and sticking).

Image  Image

Baking Day Sweater — This long, mint green sweater over a pair of black skinny jeans and black booties would be DARLING. I love the color for winter. I hope it comes back in stock in my size!

Glad Student Coat in Camel — The color of this coat goes with anything and everything, so naturally, I love it. I’ve been looking for an alternative to my black coat; while my black coat is a great every day coat in the fall, my three cats contribute many a white hair to its exterior.

Image  Image

Strut the Strut Bootie — It was love at first sight. Not surprisingly, they sold out in my size in a day and out of every size in a few days. They should be restocked soon; I may have to get these if they’re around on Black Friday because I just adore them for the holiday season. I have many outfit ideas in my head incorporating these booties! I just…the bow…

Sugar and Pumpkin Spice Sweater — You can’t really go wrong with a cable knit sweater in a perfect autumn shade. Comfy post-Thanksgiving dinner sweater, anyone?

Eeee! That was fun! I hope you enjoyed my first wishlist! I’ll probably do some more in the future featuring different stores/websites. Now back to fighting with MATLAB code. 🙂
